Website Optimization

Website optimization. What can it do for you? See if this sounds familiar to you. You go to a website and really like it, but you forget to add it to your favorites. The next day you want to find this site again. You can't remember the name of the site, but you remember it was about dogs. So you do a search in your favorite search engine like Google for sites about dogs. At the top of the page you see, "Results 1 - 10 of about 14,400,000 Sites." So you go through page after page of search results with no luck. You are not going to look at all 14,400,000 sites. You give up.

What went wrong? Well most likely it was that their site was never properly optimized. Optimizing a page is not that complicated, but there are a number of steps that must be gone through to ensure that it will rank good with the search engines. What are some of the key things that must be considered in optimizing a page?

  • Page Title (Not the name of your company. Example: This Dog Can't Hunt)
  • Key Phrases in the text of your page. (Two or three word phrases. Example: This dog can't hunt.; Hunting dogs not to buy.; You have to hunt for the right dog.)
  • Text Content (Lots of this. You need 250 or more words per page.)
  • Links back to you (From other relevant sites that also rank well.)
  • Text links to your content (Links within your content to your other pages.)
  • Look for a niche category within a large search term. (Instead of targeting "dogs or hunting dogs", optimize for a particular breed.
  • Site Map (Makes it easier for the search engines to find all of your pages.)

There is no silver bullet! It takes a lot of work optimizing a site to get it ranked well. The above list is just part of an overall optimization stratagy. One of the best ways to get ranked well is to have good content that people want to read. The content needs to be at least 250+ words, should have a good mix of key phrases that best summarizes your overall page content, and thus optimizes that page. This needs to be done on every page you have in your site.
